Families can help us to feel safe and secure in the most difficult times, but when our family systems aren’t functioning well, they can be an added source of stress and anxiety. If you want to repair or improve your relationships with your loved ones, it may be time to consider family counseling in the Georgia practice of Fleurish Psychotherapy.
When Should My Family Visit a Therapist?
There are many different reasons for visiting a family therapist. At Fleurish Psychotherapy, we work with people 13 years old and older, so our family therapy sessions are geared toward familial conflict like parenting support, repairing relationships between parents and adult children, or working through complex situations with other adult family members. If you have young children who you would like to actively participate in your sessions, we can help you find a therapist who has the necessary experience. Some of the situations where we can help your family during therapy sessions include:
Helping new parents who are struggling to adjust to life with a newborn
Parent-child therapy for one or both parents and their teen or adult children
Parents and college-aged students navigating these complex life transitions
Adult siblings who are in conflict (caring for aging parents, arguing over familial estates)
Couples who are navigating fertility concerns and those considering fostering or adoption
Parents who are divorcing or separating who want to prepare to talk to kids about the situation
Parents of preteens and teens with eating disorders through Family-Based Treatment of Eating Disorders
Will Therapy Really Help my Family?
If you’re struggling or feeling like just giving up on your family, we get it. Families can be stressful, but they can also be one of the deepest sources of love and support in our lives. Working with a therapist for family counseling can help your family in a number of different ways, including:
Improving communication between all family members
Building a stronger and more supportive family unit
Setting and respecting healthy boundaries between family members
Developing deeper empathy between family members
Learning to solve problems and avoiding conflict
Just feeling closer to and enjoying time spent with your loved ones
What Happens During Family Therapy Sessions?
Like in individual counseling, your family therapist will cater their therapy plan to address your family’s unique needs. Depending on the situation, we will usually begin your therapy journey with an initial session where all involved family members are present. Then, your counselor may ask to meet with each family member one on one. After these initial visits, you’ll come back together to create a personalized plan for your ongoing therapy sessions, set goals, and make a plan to achieve these goals.
